Friday, September 12th Woodward Elementary celebrated Literacy Day with a full day of special literacy events. Students and teachers dressed up as book characters to promote their favorite books.
All of the classes attended an assembly in the cafeteria in the morning. The assembly featured an introduction to our Book of the Year, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids by Sean Covey. Mrs. Pearch, our principal, read the book aloud as students from Mr. Outler’s 2nd Grade Class acted out the book’s scenes. The whole school enjoyed seeing the book come to life on stage.
After the skit, each grade level presented their literacy goals for the year. The goals were ambitious, but the students learned about an exciting new program that will help them meet them- Read Around the World. Students watched a special movie that introduced the new program that helps them track their reading as a class. As each class counts up the books they read through the year they get to celebrate their progress by “traveling” to different countries. There are 15 stops along the way to the ultimate destination of Australia, which requires reading 1000 books! The Wildcats are eager to begin as they roared their excitement during the movie. Before the assembly ended, the teachers came up to the stage and showed off their character costumes and the book that inspired them.
In the afternoon, all the students in costume participated in a book character parade through the halls of the school. We had so many participants that we had to have two parades this year! The halls were filled with students watching and marching. Some of the characters seen included the Cat in the Hat, Amelia Bedelia, Clifford with Emily Elizabeth, Fancy Nancy, Pecos Bill, Mrs. Bindergarten’s Kindergarten, comic book superheroes, and princesses from all the fairy tales!
¡Los gatos salvajes (Wildcats) de Woodward rujen por la lectura!
El viernes, 12 de septiembre, la Escuela Primaria Woodward celebró el Día de la Literatura con un día lleno de eventos especiales relacionados con la literatura. Los alumnos y maestros se disfrazaron como personajes de libros para promover sus libros favoritos.
En la mañana, todas las clases asistieron a una reunión en la cafetería. La reunión incluyó un prólogo del libro del año, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids (Los 7 Habitos de Niños Felices) por Sean Covey. La Sra. Pearch, nuestra directora, leyó el libro en voz alta mientras los alumnos de segundo grado de la clase del Sr. Outler representaron las escenas del libro. Toda la escuela disfrutó ver el libro cobrar vida en el escenario.
Después de la dramatización, cada grado presentó sus metas de literatura para el año. Las metas fueron ambiciosas, pero los alumnos aprendieron sobre un programa nuevo y divertido que los ayudará a cumplir las metas-ese programa se llama Read Around the World. Los alumnos miraron una película especial que les presentó el programa nuevo que les ayudará a mantener un record de su progreso en lectura como grupo. A medida que cada clase cuenta los libros que leen durante el año ellos pueden celebrar su progreso “viajando” a diferentes países. ¡Hay 15 paradas en el camino hacia el destino final de Australia, lo cual requiere que lean 1000 libros! Los gatos salvajes “Wildcats” están deseosos por empezar ya que rugieron su entusiasmo durante la película. Antes de que terminará la reunión, los maestros fueron al escenario y presentaron sus disfraces de personajes y el libro que les inspiró.
En la tarde, todos los alumnos que se disfrazaron participaron en un desfile por los pasillos de la escuela. ¡Tuvimos tantos participantes que tuvimos dos desfiles este año! Los pasillos se llenaron con alumnos que observaron y participaron del desfile. ¡Algunos de los personajes que vimos fueron el Gato en el sombrero “Cat in the Hat”, Amelia Bedelia, Clifford con Emily Elizabeth, Fancy Nancy, Pecos Bill, Mrs. Bindergarten’s Kindergarten, superhéroes de los libros de caricatura y princesas de todos los cuentos de hadas!
